Evaluation Nastya

I liked the topic, I think it‘s a general information in a nutshell for all of us about informative speeches. The structure was clear enough, but in introduction Nastya said “...tell me why...” and gives no time to answer. In my opinion, if it was rhetorical question, it wasn’t necessary to appeal to the audience; but if it was an attempt of interaction and we were supposed to answer the question, it’s be better to give us some time to reply. In the conclusion I’d love the speaker to leave us with short phrase, like wish, like final point. I liked there were some examples, which illustrated the rules. Talking about vocal performance, the tempo was perfect for me, so was the volume. Unfortunately, some words were mispronounced ( I hate to correct anyone, but here are some mispronounced words “concrete”, “familiar”, “great”). The pitch and leaping intonation somewhere made speech hard to comprehend for me. There was use of gestures, facial expression, the physical side of presentati...

Evaluation Irina

I definetely love the topic Irina spoke about. Talking about structure, I must say for me there wasn't enough linkings, sometimes I felt totally lost, didn't notice when and how we moved to the next sub-topic. I liked the tempo, the volume of the speech, but I think that the pitch should be improved, to avoid monotone and keep the audience's attention for every second (but I noted the moments when Ira changed the intonations and I loved it! Don't be afraid to play with your voice!).  I paid a lot of attention on  physical representation of the speech, as that was the topic itself. I noticed how it differed greatly from privious speakers' ( even in the small window on my computer I saw Ira was using gestures and tried to be active. Before she said the phrase the speakers are to avoid fiddling with the hair, she had done it herself for 3 times. I'd reccomend to be more emotional in voice and facial expressions :) The timing was perfect, the main points w...

Challange 6

Sometimes making phone calls makes you put aside small, but important things. Does it sound familiar to you? Well, it does for me... This week I needed to make a call to computer services and ask if they can fix my computer. I swear, I was sitting for 15 minutes in front of the mobile phone and thinking "how should I start?", "should I tell everything at once?" or "should I ask questions?" Then I realised - I need just do, that's it. Well, now I can't even remember how I started the comversation.  Finally, I told what was wrong with the computer and my printer. We discussed how long it will take and all of the details. During the conversation I caught myself thinking I have no stress or worry, this is just service and I need it. Unfortunately, I refused to fix it here as there is a mismatch of timing (I need to leave the city in 2 weeks and it won't be done by that time). It's funny, how we feel confused and insecure before some tasks,...

MY SPEECH

To see the situation with my speech, I've created the chart, where you can see the average on each aspect. 1. Organisation 19,5 . This criterion was estimated very high. Most of the topics were presented, when I made corrections to my text, so I could work with attention-getter, linking, the body better. 2. Support 13,25 . The topic was mostly practical, so I presentet tasks and to dilute the descriptions of them, I tried to show them myself. 3. Cohention 9,5 . I tried to summarise everything in the end, but there was a comment, that I'd better say something different as conclusion. 4.Vocal Presentation 19,25 . I'm defenetely glad most people noted I took advantage of all rules I spoke about in my presentation. There was an opinion that my tempo was fast to comprehend the information, though in my opinion I did long enough pauses between the words and ideas.  I believe that this happens because of my quite fast tempo of speech in both Russian and English in colloqui...

Challenge 5

Only dead fish goes with the flow. People say this phrase when people don’t want to change anything in their lives and just content themselves with what they have (even if what they have is of bad quality, uncomfortable or not-what-you-like). You can start with petty things in your life such as I did. it with perfect cup of coffee. I‘m not obsessed with coffee, but I can easily recognise if the coffee is burnt, there is way too much milk or wise versa. And betweentimes I was in situation when I take sip and  make the “ugh” sound.  Some people just take the cup and drink and feel discontenct. This week I took better for myself.  When I got my cup of coffee, took a sip and and feeling this bitter flavour. I have lots of friend who are baristas and I know how busy they actually are, but that time I said: "Could you redo, please? It is way too bitter". The boy made a wry face, but anyway, he left to da a new cup of coffee. I felt bothersome, confused and annoying. Long after...

Challenge 4

You know those moments when you want something, maybe even try to map out or just have the slightest idea of it, and it suddenly happens. I’m sure you know this feeling! And you can’t even realise it in that very moment, the time passes and you think- oh, wow, I did it! The same happened to me last week. As fourth challenge I had “to talk with neighbours”. I thought about that for a long time and it really made me nervous. I wondered if I should start the conversation or not, what we can discuss etc.  Anyway, one day I was sitting at my balcony listening to the music and drinking tea. Through the music I heard loud screams and laughter. I’ve realised these were my upstairs  neighbours aaaaand.... I just started to answer them, so the conversation was struck up. Nothing fearful, I thought! Another evidence that something’s are not that scary as we think of them! Now when I see them outside I always greet them. This situation proved me how it’s important to think about thin...

Evaluation Julia

The speech was on a great topic, I liked the structure of the body, but I think the beginning and the conclusion could be more precise. Unfortunately, I can hardly estimate the physical presentation, but I loved that the speaker used gestures sometimes and eye contact. As for vocal presentation I believe the speech could be more emotional and in a high pitch (because I know Julia can do it!) I loved that the presentation wasn’t too long, there were the main and most necessary points. By the way the visualisation was pleasant, nothing disturbed eyes.

Attention getters

I’ve watched all of the videos with speeches and their different attention getters. For now I’ve realised that the stories in the beginning draw my attention immediately, I start to feel as if I’m getting acquainted with a new friend. The person from an average speaker gains the personality. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of making references sometimes they are too general, sometimes too individual. The quotations aren’t working for me either, especially if those are the quotes of people lived long time ago. BUT! The quotes of close people- friends, relatives, etc.- can be truly touching and significant. I like starting by the questions, but the question itself should be interesting for audience to find out more. I’ll definitely try to wove one of the attention getters into my coming speech, but takes looooong time figure out how to create it greatly!

Challenge 3

Hello, would like to order pizza... saying this is not a big deal, by the way. I always do my best to avoid these conversations. However, last week my friends decided to order pizza, and I said I can ring up. - Hello! Pizza delivery. What would you like to order? - One margarita and one with chicken and mushrooms. - ok, well... your delivery address? - Lenin street, 9... - are you paying by card or by cash? ... Going on and on and on..., well, I’ve finally made an order, but I realised that talking to the operator isn’t the thing that bothers me , but the time I spend on it. I didn’t feel nervous talking to her, just bored I’d say. It really takes much time and energy to talk to somebody, follow the questions, etc. I’m not a passionate about technologies and devices, but ordering on the websites really makes this process faster and easier.

Evaluation Angelina

I really like how the speeches are getting better and better every time. For me it was difficult to estimate physical presentation, there were little movement and I understand as it is merely possible to be expressive in front of the computer. Have studied the information on this unit, I’ve realised there weren’t enough highlighted points on the topic. So the speech could be longer. By the way, I liked including the quotes and interaction with audience.
